It's not the moths you see flying around that do the damage. It's the larvae. They eat the wool from underneath, usually where a rug sits undisturbed: under a sofa, under a bed, or rolled up in a closet. By the time you notice a hole on top, they've often been at it for a while.
Wool rugs are what they're after, which is why Oriental and Persian rugs get hit most. A vacuum won't solve it. The rug needs a full wash to get the larvae, eggs and debris out, then a treatment so they don't come back.

Check the back of the rug and under furniture. That's where it starts. Don't wait on it: moths can ruin a valuable rug in just a few months.
Small holes
Holes in the pile, often in a cluster, that slowly get bigger.

How to Keep Moths Away
Once your rug is clean and treated, a few habits make a big difference.
Vacuum the back too
Every so often, flip a corner and vacuum underneath, and clean under furniture that sits on the rug.
Move things around
Rotate the rug and shift furniture now and then. Moths like dark spots that never get disturbed.
Store it clean
Never store a dirty rug. Clean it first, then wrap it in something breathable, not plastic.
Check the hidden spots
Look under sofas and beds and inside closets a few times a year.
Clean it regularly
A professional cleaning every year or two removes what moths feed on.
